Arsene Wenger’s future his been a topic of discussion for much of this season. A devastating 5-1 loss to Bayern Munich should now show the Arsenal boss what he needs to do next.

Arsene Wenger: Will he stay or will he go? The debate has raged on all season long. After an emphatic 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, the answer should now be clearer than ever for the Arsenal boss.

Everybody knows that Wenger just does not want to leave Arsenal. The Frenchman believes he is never too far away from a league title or a Champions League title, and that next year could be the year.

The problem with that, however, is that it has been next year, and next year, and next year…. for around a decade now. The Gunners have not improved for a long time, particularly so over the past five or six years. It’s just the same campaign every year on loop.

Threaten to be in the Premier League title race, but ultimately finish top four. Ease through the Champions League group stages, before then being outclassed in the knockout rounds. Every year. Without fail.

This season, unsurprisingly, is proving the same all over again. The loss to Bayern means the Gunners are now all but eliminated from Europe for another season. But this time, things seemed a little different.

Usually, observers on the outside look on with the expectation of seeing the same old Arsenal play out the same old tired campaign. Against Bayern, however, it seemed that not only outsiders could see what was destined to come, but also the Arsenal players too.

More from The Top Flight

The Arsenal team looked defeated in the second half. Almost a sense of ‘here we go again’ from Wenger’s own men. It would appear, that this is now the team’s mentality. It’s even gotten into their psyche that they’re good, but not good enough. That they will fail in the end. And fail they did.

The team has a chronic lack of leadership. Arsenal just go through motions at a time when somebody needs to shake the others out of their slump. An acceptance, almost. Wenger has allowed the team to fail without repercussion for so long that it’s acceptable now. The norm.

But with Wenger’s contract expiring in the summer, the Gunners fans growing increasingly disgruntled, a dawning realization that Arsenal need a change, and now a 5-1 mauling by Bayern, Wenger will surely, finally, realize it’s time to step down.

How many years can this go on for before there is finally a change? Maybe Wenger sees himself stepping down as a sign of failure. But it’s not a sign of failure. Arsene Wenger is a legend at Arsenal and will be remembered forever. But time moves on for everyone.

Unfortunately, time moved on for Wenger a long time ago. It’s just taken this long for the penny to drop. And surely, after the team’s tepid display against Bayern, Wenger will see by the showing of his own players that the time for change must be this summer.
