Chelsea: Diego Costa agrees new five-year contract at Stamford Bridge
Diego Costa was linked with a move to China in January, but has now agreed a new five-year deal at Chelsea. Were the links to China authentic or just tactical in order to push for a new contract?
Diego Costa is set to sign a new contract at Chelsea. Costa had been linked with a move to the Chinese Super League just last month. But the Brazilian has now agreed fresh terms on a new five-year deal to remain at Stamford Bridge, according to The Sun.
Costa’s new deal is worth £220,000 a week plus bonuses, which could see the striker paid up to £65 million per year. All told, Costa’s new deal will put him in the top five of the Premier League’s highest earners.
Chelsea are on a roll in the Premier League and the news of Costa’s new contract can only boost the Blues further. Just as Costa’s links to China last month brought a danger to the club’s Premier League title ambitions.
But sceptical observers will now point to how quickly Costa has re-signed with the Blues after seeming to be unsettled only a month ago. Does that show the Brazilian’s commitment to the cause? Or does it show his real intentions all along?

Reports suggest that Chelsea rejected a bid from Chinese Super League team Tianjin Quanjin in January. So that suggests the interest from abroad was very real. But were the Chinese outfit misled by Costa’s people all along? Possibly.
The interest and subsequent bid wont have done Costa’s negotiating power any harm at Chelsea. However, regardless, the fact that Costa has re-signed so quickly is fantastic news for the club. Fantastic for the club’s title quest.
It’s not like the money being paid to the striker is totally outrageous. After all, the 28-year-old is in the midst of firing Chelsea to the Premier League title. Whilst Costa already scored the goals that brought one Premier League crown to Stamford Bridge two years ago, too.
Now, it would seem, will come another. It’s not easy to find strikers who can a) score so many goals, and b) do it so reliably and consistently. Costa brings that valuable asset. That valuable asset costs money.

People will likely question Costa’s motives so soon after seeming to be unsettled at the club. But in the end, Chelsea now get to keep hold of a striker that they know can score the goals that they need to win titles.
If that continues on in the next five years, then it will be money well spent.
