Is Moussa Sissoko Chelsea bound? Tottenham looked to be the favorites to sign the Newcastle United midfielder. But Chelsea now seem to be making another desperate last-minute move.

Is Moussa Sissoko Chelsea bound? That is the question after the Blues entered the race to sign the Frenchman, according to the Mirror.  Sissoko is quickly turning into one of the sagas of the transfer deadline.

Tottenham were yesterday linked with the midfielder, but Spurs now have competition it seems. The sticking point for any interested parties seems to be the price Newcastle have put on Sissoko’s head.

The Magpies are asking £30 million according to reports and that is a lot higher than his form at Newcastle would deserve. At a lower price Sissoko would be a good pickup for most teams in some role or another. Maybe around the £20 million region. Not £30 million and above.

Sissoko had an eye-catching Euro 2016, though, and this is where much of this fee and interest is stemming from. But getting that Moussa Sissoko, in that form, on a regular basis is the problem. Everybody knows how good he can be when he’s at his best.

And why, specifically, would Chelsea be sniffing around Sissoko anyway?

The center of the Blues midfield houses the likes of N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic. Cesc Fabregas even struggles to get a game right now, how is Sissoko going to get into the team? Although, the 27-year-old can play in a wide area too.

However, Chelsea have the excellent duo of Eden Hazard and Willain on the wings, so a starting spot there looks even less likely. The reality is Chelsea are panicking. Panicking at centre-back with talks to bring back David Luiz and now panicking looking at Sissoko. If the reports are to be believed, that is.

Sissoko would make a good addition to the ranks of the Chelsea squad. A versatile player who can do a job in numerous positions. But at the price Newcastle are asking you have to be desperate. Which is most likely why Chelsea are in the discussions in the first place.

Antonio Conte may not be entirely happy with his squad right now, but panic buying is never a good thing. Whatever anybody thinks about David Luiz, at least the Brazilian would be helping a problem position if he returns to Stamford Bridge. At least he would be a boost to the centre-back ranks.

Sissoko will probably be fourth choice in central midfield and fourth, maybe third, choice on the flanks. In addition to Hazard and Willian, Chelsea also have Spaniard Pedro and Victor Moses, who Conte seems to be giving a Chelsea lifeline to in the wide areas.

Reports of the move give off a stench of Chelsea desperation right now. If the Blues end up paying around £30 million for Sissoko, that’ll confirm it.
