Sunderland Quickly Becoming Relegation Favorites… Again

While many things in the world of football will change on a yearly, monthly and daily basis, some items will never change. At least it appears that way. For the third season in-a-row, Sunderland find themselves slugging it out at the bottom of the Premier League table.

In the two prior seasons, a mid-season manager change was required for the Black Cats. Each time, the club has managed to fight its way out of the bottom three and into a safe position in the table. With each escape becoming greater than its previous version, one has to wonder how much longer Sunderland can walk the relegation tight rope.

Hiring Dick Advocaat late in the campaign, the Dutchman led Sunderland back to safety before “retiring into the sunset”. The only problem was that Dick Advocaat did not retire. Choosing to return to the Stadium of Light this season, Sunderland have yet to make any major investments into the playing squad.

With the promise to Dick Advocaat that Sunderland would invest heavily into the club, not only have the Black Cats board failed in their promise to the Dutch manager, but now are again in danger of seeing themselves relegated to the English Championship.

While these statements do not leave Dick Advocaat blameless in the finger pointing that surrounds Sunderland’s winless start to the season, these facts do show the boards lack of investment towards the clubs future.

Firing and hiring managers every season can only help you pass the blame for so long. Sooner or later, club supporters will realize that the blame for the clubs poor Premier League campaigns lay squarely on the shoulders of those sitting on the board of directors.

Even though the season is only five matches old, Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat has to be having second thoughts about choosing to return to the Stadium of Light this past summer. The regret could soon lead the Dutchman out the door at Sunderland with the Black Cats lining up next season in the English Championship.

However, with the above being said, the season is only five matches old. Sunderland could easily break out of this funk and return to competing in the Premier League’s mid-table.

However, the terrible form displayed thus far by the Black Cats has to concern many of there supporters. If Sunderland cannot quickly figure out how to win in the Premier League then we could finally see Sunderland AFC making the drop at the season’s end.
