When thinking about the history of the Premier League, Arsenal’s 2003 run in the Premier League always comes to mind. Though Chelsea have been the closest to replicating the Gunners unbelievable run, Manchester City look to be real contenders to run the table this season an go undefeated in the Premier League.

Nicknamed “The Invincibles” following their undefeated season in the Premier League, that Arsenal squad will undoubtedly be talked about for many years to come. Only the second club in English football history to an entire league campaign without losing, that 2003 Arsenal side is possibly the greatest team of all-time.

Since that 2003 campaign by Arsenal, the Premier League has twice come close to engineering another for the list of “Invincibles”. The year following Arsenal’s unbelievable run, Chelsea almost managed to replicate the Gunners success. However, the Blues would lose to Manchester City 1-0 in their only loss of the league campaign.

From that point onward however, no club in the Premier League has come that close to joining “The Invincibles”. However, that could change this season. Opening the campaign with five shutout wins, Manchester City have proven them self a leg above all of their league rivals thus far this season.

The summer signings of Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne have already payed dividends this season for the Citizens. Bolstering their already strong lineup has not only made Manchester City an early season title favorite, but has also lead some to believe that they can run the table.

Even with star striker Sergio Aguero possibly out for a few matches, Manchester City have one of the strongest Premier League lineups from top to bottom. Avoiding any major injury of fitness runs will also be key to whether City can go undefeated in the Premier League this season.

However, while the chance is their for the Citizens to run the table, the likelihood of them doing so is still quite far-fetched. Only two clubs in England football history — 1888/1889 Preston North End and 2003/2004 Arsenal — have gone an entire top league season without a single loss.

Also standing in the way of Manchester City will be the side’s massive season schedule. Along with the Premier League, Manchester City will expect to compete in the League Cup, FA Cup and Champions League for most of the campaign. With so many matches, it will be almost impossible not to slip up in Premier League play.

While no one can expect to go undefeated, the overall quality of Manchester City thus far this season gives me hope of the sides chances. Should their form prove to be a lasting one, Manchester City could become the next club to join the ranks of “The Invincibles”.
