Watford FC are close to completing a deal for Switzerland National Team member Valon Behrami. The midfielder is looking set to join Bundesliga compatriot Xherdan Shaqiri in possible moves to the English Premier League.

More from Premier League

Unlike Shaqiri though, Valon Behrami’s potential move to the Premier League has not come with much fanfare. The Switzerland international is looking likely to join newly promoted side Watford, a club many predict will be relegated at the end of the current season.

The Hamburg midfielder made 22 appearances last season for the Bundesliga side following his arrival from Napoli. The Swiss international will likely become a top player at Watford following the clubs Premier League promotion.

At 30-years of age, Valon Behrami is most likely past his prime. However, his age will also give him the experience necessary to possibly help the Hornets avoid relegation. His age should also result in less Switzerland call-ups following the 2016 European Championships, allowing the side to keep his legs consistently fresh in the future.

His addition to the midfield will also give the Hornets a shot in the arm in terms of Premier League experience. The Swiss midfielder appeared in 50 matches for West Ham United from 2008-2011 before leaving to join Fiorentina.

Valon Behrami could be also be joining Watford FC’s newly developing midfield. The central midfielder will likely join current Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Benjamin Stambouli in the Hornets first team. The 24-year old is poised to leave Spurs this summer in order to gain first team playing time.

The 24-year old could also use Valon Behrami as a tutor during his development. Not yet having made an appearance for the French National Team, Behrami will be looking to use his first team time at Watford to propel him in his future.

More from The Top Flight

The French player joined Tottenham this past summer from Ligue 1 side Montpellier. However, Stambouli only made 12 appearances last season for Spurs. With much youth and depth at the midfield for Tottenham, Stambouli’s tenure at White Hart Lane could be cut short.

All that is needed to complete the transfer from Hamburg to Watford FC is a medical evaluation. Should that medical come back clean, Behrami will almost certainly be joining the Hornets for the upcoming season.

Much more work will need to be done by Watford in the coming weeks though. If the Hornets want any hope of avoiding relegation next season, more players of Valon Behrami’s quality will be needed to ensure the sides survival.

However, this move by the Hornet’s promises to give the side some hope of Premier League survival this season as well as prove Watford could soon be able to fight for a mid-table finish.
