Arsenal FC have continued to look for ways to improve for the upcoming season and are now in pursuit of Napoli forward Gonzalo Higuain. However, to secure the Argentine’s services, the Gunners will have to literally break the bank.

More from Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has been informed that the club will have to pay a club record £67 million in order to sign the star attacker. Currently representing Argentina at the Copa America tournament in Chile, Gonzalo Higuain is one of the Gunners top summer targets.

The forward scored 18 goals last season in Seria A and almost lead his club to a berth in the Champions League. The forward also played in all but one league match last season, showing the attackers reliability.

Though Arsenal FC are keen on signing the forward, Napoli chief Nicolas Lombardo has revealed the Argentina National Team member will only leave once his £67 million release clause. The current British transfer record is from last season after Manchester United payed £59,700,000 for Angel Di Maria.

If Arsenal were to sign the star forward, not only would it shatter the British transfer record, but would also put the club under much pressure. Breaking the bank for Gonzalo Higuain will place the Gunners into Premier League title or bust territory.

Arsene Wenger’s position at the club would be under even more pressure should the signing be confirmed. Spending that type of money, anything less than a Premier League title for the Gunners will be unacceptable.

With the a portion of Arsenal FC’s supporters pushing for Arsene Wenger to leave the club, that sentiment could grow following a transfer fee that large and failing to win a title. The Frenchman’s future would lie in the balance with the potential signing of Gonzalo Higuain.

At 27-years of age, Higuain is in the prime of his career. However, his eighteen goals last season in Seria A are not enough to match a £67 million valuation. If Arsenal were to meet the players release clause, the side would be taking a major risk.

Other players are available in the current transfer market for far less that could be used in the attack. In fact the club already has Olivier Giroud ready and willing to lead the side. Adding players who can add depth to the lineup should be Arsene Wenger’s plan.

The pressure from making such a signing will affect both the purchasing club and the player. At such a high transfer price, one has to wonder of Gonzalo Higuain is really worth the record amount that Napoli want for him.
