Southampton FC have now been made bookmakers favorites to sign Paris St. Germain want-away midfielder Yohan Cabaye. The former Newcastle star has failed to make an impact at PSG since his arrival in January 2014.

More from Premier League

PSG are likely to require a minimum of £10 million for their midfielder. Crystal Palace were originally the favorites to land the French international thanks to Cabaye’s past under Alan Pardew. Pardew managed Newcastle United during Cabaye’s time with the Magpies.

Meeting with France National Team manager Didier Deschamps, Cabaye was told he would need consistent first team minutes to secure a spot on France’s 2016 European Championship roster. Even more important to the French players is the championship being hosted in France.

Wanting a Premier League return, PSG manager Laurent Blanc has agreed to let the surplus defensive midfielder depart this summer. Since this announcement, a number of clubs have been linked with the French National Team member.

Among the interested parties are West Ham, Arsenal, Spurs, Crystal Palace, Liverpool and predictably, Newcastle United. However, it is more than likely that Southampton now lead the chase for the Frenchman.

With Morgan Schneiderlin closing on a deal to join Manchester United, Southampton FC have a major hole to fill in the midfield. Adding Yohan Cabaye would not only fill that gap at defensive midfielder, but also allows for a profit on the Schneiderlin and Cabaye swap.

If Southampton FC can manage to backdoor their way into signing Yohan Cabaye, the Saints chances of succeeding in Europe and England next season will dramatically increase. Filling the hole left by Morgan Schneiderlin this quickly will make the Saints an early season European place favorite.

The proposed move also shows the skill of manager Ronald Koeman. Moving quickly and subtly has become a trademark of the Dutchman’s transfer policy since his arrival on the South Coast last summer.

Continuing with that style, Southampton could make a move for Yohan Cabaye within the coming days. After all, all of the Saints summer transfers this year have taken under a week since the news first broke. If any other club wants a shot at Cabaye, they will need to move just as quickly to do so.

One thing that Southampton FC can offer right off the bat is solid first team minutes. Cabaye would immediately fill the hole left in the Southampton’s starting lineup from the Morgan Schneiderlin transfer.

Signing Yohan Cabaye will also show that Southampton and Ronald Koeman mean business this season. The Saints have targeted the Champions League as a goal for the coming seasons, making these moves even more important to the club.
