Swansea City are close to pulling off a massive transfer coup for the Welsh club. It is expected that — pending a physical — Swansea City will officially sign former Olympique de Marseille forward Andre Ayew.

More from Premier League

A Ghanaian international, Ayew has spent the past eight seasons with the French club. Letting his contract expire at the seasons end, Ayew has been a free-agent since the Ligue 1 season’s conclusion.

Expected to sign for a mid-to-upper Premier League club, Ayew’s possible arrival at the Welsh side would represent a massive coup for Garry Monk. Finishing eighth last season, Swansea City are pressing to become a permanent member of the upper table club.

Should this be a signal for the future, Swansea City could easily become one of the top mid-table clubs. Competing for Europa League positions on a yearly basis is the goal for Garry Monk and his Swans team.

The Ghanaian international scored 44 times in his 159 appearances for Marseille. An attacker by trade, Ayew would help fill a hole in Swansea’s attack. Though Gomis played well following Wilfried Bony’s sale, Swansea were missing that key member in the attack.

Playing out wide or behind Gomis will give Swansea City that key member. Setting up Gomis will allow for more scoring chances as well as an improvement overall in their attack.

A downside of this move however could be the players transition to England. Not only is the Premier League different than Ligue 1, the countries are not similar. Adjusting to life in a new country after spending his whole life in France will not be easy.

More from The Top Flight

Though he represents Ghana at the international level, Ayew was born and raised in France. His immigrant parents gave him the ability to play for Ghana. He has not disappointed, scoring eleven times for the senior side and representing the country at both the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

Adjusting to the life in Wales and England will be key towards Ayew’s success on the pitch. Playing in Wales will also require much travel from the player. The Welsh side will have to play all nineteen away matches this season in England.

Should he manage to adjust to the style of play in the Premier League as well as life in England and Wales, Ayew could become one of the best transfers this summer. Strong play could also make Ayew one of the best players on the Swans roster.

Swansea City may not be in the top tier of English Soccer clubs, but the signing of Andre Ayew marks a major moment in Swansea City’s history. Signing a top level player will help the Swans in their quest for yearly European soccer and turn them into an annual contender for the top six.
