Southampton FC appear likely to sign Sporting Lisbon Right Back Cedric Soares in the very near future. Multiple news outlets including the Metro are reporting that the Saints are “very close” to signing the Portuguese international.

More from Premier League

With the signing expected to be finalized very soon, Liverpool and Manchester United target Nathaniel Clyne looks set to depart St. Mary’s some time this summer. The move for Cedric Soares has come about thanks to Clyne not agreeing to a new contract as of yet.

It is now highly unlikely that Nathaniel Clyne will sign an extension. With his growing stock in the England National Team, Clyne will be looking for a move up in the game and possibly to a place where he will not share starts.

Like Nathaniel Clyne, Cedric Soares only has 12 months remaining on his contract and has refused to sign an extension with Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon.

Also interested in the German born players signature was Everton and Stoke City. Both were thought to be offering sums near £3 million for the Right Back. To beat their rivals to the punch, Southampton FC is expected to sign Soares for £3.5 million.

With the move likely to come in the next few hours, Ronald Koeman can turn the club’s attention towards their next signings. The Saints are interested in QPR forward Charlie Austin and Feyenoord Captain Jordy Clasie.

With the transfer income expected from the Nathaniel Clyne and Morgan Schneiderlin departure’s, Ronald Koeman could have a large treasure chest available this summer. Signing players like Cedric Soares will make that money go along way as well as giving the Saints a good and developing roster.

Since making his senior side debut with Sporting Lisbon in 2012, Soares has made 67 appearences for the side. Becoming one of the top defenders for Lisbon, Cedric Soares has decided to continue his development with Southampton FC.

At only 23-years of age, Soares still has some developing to do. Joining up with Southampton will give him the perfect conditions to become one of the world’s best defenders.

Southampton’s history with developing top tier talent is evidence enough that Cedric Soares has made the right choice. Joining the Saints will also give him the opportunity to start right off the bat.

Of course, joining the Premier League from the Portuguese Top Division will take some adjustment. The physicality of the Premier League is only one of the major adjustments that Cedric Soares will need to make.

The defender will also have to come to terms with the pace of play and skill level he will now face on a weekly basis. Every match will be tough. However, once Soares adjusts, expect him to become one of Southampton FC’s top defenders.
