Marco Reus Signs New Borussia Dortmund Contract

The worlds most wanted man–Marco Reus–has signed a new deal to remain with Borussia Dortmund. The new contract will keep the 25-year old German star with his hometown club until 2019.

More from The Top Flight

With Borussia Dortmund having their worst campaign in twenty years, many thought the side had no hope of retaining Reus. Even in the clubs golden years, it had failed to keep stars Mario Götze and Robert Lewandowski from leaving the club.

With Reus being courted by most of Europe’s top clubs, Reus leaving was seen as a forgone conclusion. In the end, it was the player’s heart that allowed him to stay with his hometown club. Reus revealed on Facebook how his love for the club kept him from leaving.

"“I am very much looking forward to the future at BVB with our outstanding fans backing us. My heart has decided. Let’s get it started. We want to achieve a lot of things. Not only this season.”"

With the likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United and more all interested in signing the German star, Reus decided to stay with the struggling giant. For the first time in many years, a star players motive was not monetary or selfish, but to help his club succeed. Though, I do suspect he received a hefty raise in the process.

In his previous contract, Reus had a €25 million release clause. Borussia Dortmund revealed during the clubs statement on the contract that the release clause has been terminated in the new contract.

"“From this day on, there are no more release clauses.”"

The main part of the contract is not just extending his stay with the club, but also removing that release clause. For the time being, it appears Dortmund will hold onto their man.

  • However, should Reus continue to improve at his current pace, it will not be long before the world’s top clubs are calling again. This time though, should Dortmund sell, they can ask any price that they see fit.

With one of the sides best players locked up for the foreseeable future, Dortmund must now focus on escaping the relegation battle and return to glory at the top of the Bundesliga. With 19 points in 20 matches, Dortmund have some serious work to do.

If the standings hold, Dortmund would have to play a promotion playoff against the third placed side in the 2nd Bundesliga. However, only three points separate Dortmund from 13th in the table. If Jurgen Klopp’s men can turn their season around, the club could easily finish top ten in the standings.

Many within Dortmund have spoken highly of Marco Reus, including club CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.

"“Marco Reus can define an era in Dortmund just like Uwe Seeler has done at Hamburg or Steven Gerrard at Liverpool. Marco has opted for BVB amid a sporting crisis. It shows he truly identifies with the club and that makes us very proud.”"

With the deal finalized, all that remains to be seen is how long it takes for Dortmund to return to its former glory. For Marco Reus and the clubs supporters, the return cannot come soon enough.
