David De Gea will be staying with Manchester United, his agent confirmed on Wednesday. Jorge Mendes hinted during an interview, that De Gea plans to extend his contract and remain with the club for the next few years.

"“He has one year left on his contract and I think that he will stay in Manchester. The player will decide, but he’s happy there.”"

English tabloid Daily Mail is reporting that Real Madrid could be set to swoop for the Spanish star next season. De Gea will have a year left on his current contract this summer, and should an extension fail to be reached, Madrid could sign De Gea for a very cheap price.

Sky Sports’ Spanish soccer expert Guillem Balague is also reporting that De Gea is considering a new deal with the Red Devils. A deal that could possibly make him the world’s highest paid goalkeeper.

"“He is negotiating a new deal with Manchester United and that seems to be the priority now. So I think he will sign a new contract and become the best-paid goalkeeper in the world, ahead of (Madrid’s Iker) Casillas perhaps.”"

However, Balague does not believe that a new deal will keep De Gea at Old Trafford for very long.

"“But that does not mean he will stay at Manchester United. It is very clear that Real Madrid want De Gea. Now the problem is that Real Madrid will have to convince Manchester United to sell.”"

At only 24-years of age, De Gea has the ability to become the world’s best goalkeeper within the next few years. A player like him comes along once a decade. Retaining his services would allow Manchester United to constantly serve as one of the strongest defensive sides in all of soccer.

However, Manchester United should be no stranger to the Spanish itch. In 2007, Manchester United signed Cristiano Ronaldo to a new contract in an attempt to fend off interest from Real Madrid. It didn’t work. A little over two years later, Ronaldo joined Madrid and has since become the world’s best player.

It is inevitable that De Gea will eventually leave for Real Madrid. After all, De Gea spent the first part of his career playing in Madrid for derby rivals Atlético Madrid. His connection to the city will likely become too much for De Gea to ignore, opening the door for Real Madrid to swoop in.

The Red Devils are smart to sign De Gea to a contract though. Extending his contract would keep him at United as long as possible while also giving them the ability to inflate his transfer price. If Real Madrid really want De Gea, they will pay any price. Manchester United know that and won’t hesitate to ask for a large amount.

As David De Gea continues to age, he will only get better. He could easily become the world’s best goalkeeper. If Manchester United are to sell him, extending his contract now will allow them much more leverage in his future transfer.

Given Real Madrid’s track record, we know the Spanish giants will not hesitate to sign De Gea, no matter the cost. Expect this transfer fee to rival some of the top transfers in the world, while also being the most expensive ever for a goalkeeper.
