Nathaniel Clyne joining Manchester United?

Manchester United and Louis Van Gaal have become obsessed. The Red Devils signed Southampton full back Luke Shaw last summer for £28 million and now are looking to add his former teammate in Nathaniel Clyne.

Thus far Shaw has yet to produce for United, having spent most of the season in the treatment room. Only appearing in nine matches this season, Shaw has shown the early signs of becoming a bust, much to the delight of the Southampton faithful.

These are the same supporters who watched on as their beloved side was sold left and right to much bigger clubs for overinflated prices. Many experts called for instant relegation this season, with no hope for the Saints. Now, that same squad that was destined for relegation are now fighting to finish top four in the Premier League and qualify for the Champions League.

However, all is not well on the South Coast. It is becoming more apparent that even with a top four finish, the club can and will be plundered again by those above it in the league.

With 77 appearances for the club, Nathaniel Clyne looks set to become the next star to leave for greener contracts. Manchester United are reportedly interested in singing the full back before the January transfer window is up.

With an asking price of £30 million, United are prepared to offer up in an attempt to sign the 23-year old English international. However, the player himself has said that he would not leave Southampton until at least this summer while he continues to negotiate a contract extension.

"“We will wait until April. I’m still negotiating my contract with my agent and the club.”"

Should Clyne decide to leave, Southampton would be left to face a possible exodus part two. French international Morgan Schneiderlin and injured forward Jay Rodriguez are the first two looking set to leave this summer, with Arsenal and Tottenham both linked to the players.

Should Clyne decide to stay, it could mean the turning of a page in English soccer. Should Southampton retain most of their stars and continue to grow, it could mark a change in power for the English Premier League. One that would mean the beginning of the Southampton era.

The decision made by Nathaniel Clyne will set the Saints off in one of two directions. One of great success, or one of failure and relegation. It is not often one man controls a clubs future. In this case though, Nathaniel Clyne does just that. For the Southampton supporters, all we can do is hope and pray.

Nathaniel Clyne might join Manchester United this summer or he might remain with the club that brought him great success in Southampton. Either way, Nathaniel Clyne will be looking to prove himself as one of best full backs in the Premier League and the world.
