Top January Transfer Rumors

The January Transfer window is almost here. We take a look at the top three rumors heading into next year, and why these moves should or should not happen.

Edinson Cavani – Paris St. Germain (Ligue 1) to Arsenal (EPL)

Following the recent falling out between Edinson Cavani and PSG Manager Laurent Blanc, Arsenal seem poised to strike for the Uruguayan Star. With the asking price expected to be in the £50 million range, only the top clubs in Europe will be able to afford such a player. However, when it comes to Arsenal, who knows what’s going to happen?

Arsenal has in the past, put the club’s bank account totals first, but bringing in a player like Cavani automatically improves the squad. No matter who currently holds a starting role in any team, replacing him with Cavani is a no-brainier. One major problem though, Arsenal have forwards — a lot of them, and a lot of good ones.

With Welbeck, Sanchez and Giroud already holding down starting roles up front, why bring in another forward when the club’s main issue lies in defense. With so many injuries and so few actual senior defenders, Arsenal must focus on upgrading and adding to its existing defensive corpse if the club wishes to contend down the stretch. Adding Cavani helps the squad, I admit that, but when you have allowed more goals than any club in the top six, that to me says the defense needs help.

Mats Hummels – Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga) to Arsenal/Manchester United (EPL)

Arsenal and Manchester United appear to be going toe to toe for the defender. The German international seems set to leave Borussia Dortmund in January following the horrible start this season. Hummels has even gone as far as slamming the side’s defense during this turbulent time.

"“We’ve managed pretty well at home in recent weeks, but not at all away. It’s pretty astonishing that we are so pathetic.”Source: The Mirror"

Arsenal has been one of the worst defending sides in the top half of the Premier League this season — mostly down to injuries and some questionable summer sales. The club is now in desperate need of a quality central defender and Mats Hummel’s fits the bill. The addition of the German star would improve the Arsenal defense and fill the leadership void at the back. Acquiring a vocal and veteran leader could help Arsenal make a late charge this season, maybe even into title contention.

One piece of news that Arsenal fans will hate to see is the interest from Manchester United. Arsenal’s longtime rivals look set to battle for the defender’s services, and are prepared to offer something in the range of £45 million for the star defender. Though the Red Devils may not have as big of a hole as Arsenal when it comes to defense, Hummels would come into United with the starting job already in hand. He would transform this defense, improving United all around, possibly putting them back in title contention as well.

Wilfried Bony – Swansea City (EPL) to Manchester City/Liverpool (EPL)

More from Arsenal

The Swansea City and Ivory Coast star looks set for a move to one of the giants. The top two clubs from last season, Manchester City and Liverpool, seem ready to pounce. Both clubs are in desperate need of a top forward to help up front. For Swansea City, it appears even better as Gary Monk could look to cash in on the possible bidding war between two Premier League giants.

Liverpool appear most likely to make a move for the South Wales forward. Having scored seven goals in just twelve matches, Bony already has one third of Liverpool’s total goal tally. With Brendan Rodgers managerial seat getting hotter all the time, making a move for the goal-scoring forward has to be a must. Adding to the cause for Liverpool will be the expected departure of Mario Balotelli this January, Liverpool have more pressure than ever to sign a scorer.

For Manchester City however, it’s not about getting a star forward. It’s about getting someone to help up top. Sergio Agüero has almost single-handedly carried the Manchester City front line this season. Having scored fourteen league goals, more than a third of City’s goal tally. Bringing in Bony would give them another legitimate target up front, taking pressure off Agüero.

These and other rumors going around right now have the January window almost bursting at the seams. This could be one of the most hectic transfer windows we have ever seen. Stay tuned for more on the transfer window to see who’s going, and where are they headed.
