History was made on Saturday as Mohamed Salah set multiple records in Liverpool’s 3-1 comeback victory over Southampton in the Premier League. The Egyptian forward scored twice, helping the Reds overturn a one-goal deficit to extend their lead at the top of the table to 16 points over second-placed Arsenal, albeit having played two more matches.

However, the biggest story of the day was the two records Salah achieved. Heading into the match, Liverpool’s No. 11 was tied for third place on the club’s all-time top scorers list with 241 goals, level with former England striker Gordon Hodgson. He was also sixth on the Premier League’s all-time top scorers chart.

Southampton took the lead early through Will Smallbone, but Liverpool responded when Darwin Núñez was brought down inside the box by Smallbone. The Uruguayan had already equalized for Arne Slot’s side before Salah stepped up to take the resulting penalty. Despite Aaron Ramsdale guessing correctly and diving to his right, he was unable to stop the Egyptian international from converting.

Salah’s first goal of the game was his 26th in the league this season and, more significantly, put him in outright third place on Liverpool’s all-time top scorers list. Only Roger Hunt (285) and Ian Rush (346) have scored more for the Merseyside giants.

Liverpool continued to push for a goal to seal the win, but Southampton held firm until the 87th minute. Right-back Yukinari Sugawara was adjudged to have handled the ball while trying to keep Luis Díaz at bay. After a VAR intervention, referee Lewis Smith reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor and awarded Liverpool their second penalty. Salah stepped up again, this time sending Ramsdale the wrong way and placing the ball into the top right corner.

With that goal, Salah reached 184 Premier League goals, drawing level with Argentine legend Sergio Agüero. His next target is Andy Cole, who scored 187 goals in the competition. Given his current form, it is only a matter of time before Salah surpasses him to move into fourth place. The top three remain Wayne Rooney (208), Harry Kane (213), and Alan Shearer (260).

The 2024-25 season is shaping up to be Salah’s most prolific yet. With 29 goals and 17 assists, he leads the Premier League in both categories. Across all competitions, he has amassed 32 goals and 22 assists. On a team level, this campaign could be his most successful, with Liverpool holding a commanding 16-point lead and looking destined for the Premier League title.

On Tuesday, they host Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash. After finishing as the best team in the league phase and securing a 1-0 win in Paris in the first leg, the Reds will be favorites to advance to the quarter-finals.

Next Sunday, they will take on Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final at Wembley, aiming to add silverware to their already impressive season.
