Liverpool 2-1 Chelsea: As it happened

It was an unassuming start to the game, but it soon burst into life. Liverpool were awarded a penalty just before the half hour mark, after Colwill had caught Jones in the box. As he so often does, Salah smashed the ball into the back of the net to give Liverpool the lead.

Just a couple of minutes later, and Gakpo had the ball in the back of the net after a ball across goal from Salah. However, upon a VAR review, it was adjudged to be offside, and the game was still 1-0 – staying that way until the half time interval.

Three minutes into the second half, there was more VAR drama. A superb through ball from Caicedo found Jackson, who slotted home - a carbon copy of the goal the Senegalese striker scored against West Ham United recently. The linesman had his flag up, but upon VAR, Konate was playing the striker onside and the teams were level again at 1-1.

Only around a minute later, and everything changed again. Salah put in a sublime cross from the right hand side, which was met by Jones who stabbed the ball home to put Slot’s side into the lead for the second time of the game.

In truth, the game petered out after that, with Chelsea struggling to wrestle back the momentum. They did have a late flurry very late on, as Veiga headed over from a Palmer free-kick, and Gusto had a shot in the dying seconds well blocked by Robertson. However, it wasn’t to be, and Liverpool scored a big three points to make it seven wins from eight Premier League games.
