How did Premier League sides fare in the Champions League
It was another fantastic European night for Aston Villa, who overcame Serie A side Bologna, with a 2-0 victory at Villa Park. John McGinn opened the scoring, after his free-kick delivery went all the way in. Then, renowned super sub Jhon Duran made the most of a rare start by making sure of the points.
Aston Villa are now top of the entire league phase, with nine points from their three games so far, in their first Champions League campaign in over forty years.
Meanwhile, it was a less eventful game at the Emirates, as Arsenal squeezed past Shakhtar Donestk 1-0, with the goal being an own goal. Leandro Trossard missed a penalty late on, with many fans wondering why the in form Kai Havertz did not take instead.
Arsenal are in 9th place, with seven points from three games - one place outside the automatic qualification to the last 16 of the Champions League.
Onto Wednesday, where Liverpool traveled to Germany to face RB Leipzig. Darwin Nunez stabbed the ball home after 27 minutes, for Liverpool's and the games only goal. It looked like the shot from Mo Salah was going in anyway, when Nunez got something on it, though some are claiming it was hitting the post.
In any case, this win leaves Liverpool second in the league phase, with nine points from three games. Arne Slot's side and Villa are the only two teams with a perfect record after three games.
Finally, Manchester City hosted Sparta Praha, and came away with a routine 5-0 victory. Phil Foden, John Stones, Haaland x2, and Matheus Nunes were on the scoresheet. Not much to dissect, though one of Haaland's goals was an absolutely outrageous finish, regardless of opponent.
This draw leaves Manchester City third in the league phase, with seven points from three games - meaning Premier League clubs make up the top three.
