This midweek marked the fourth round of the 24/25 Carabao Cup. With it, a number of Premier League sides were in action. Let’s see how they got on, and who they have drawn in the quarter-finals.

Carabao Cup fourth round review

On Tuesday night, Southampton were in action, as they welcomed Championship side Stoke City to St Mary’s. The saints when 2-0 up thanks to Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Adam Armstrong, before their visitors pegged them back to 2-2. Still, a late goal from James Bree was enough to give Russell Martin’s side a 3-2 win, and set them on their way to the quarter-finals.

Elsewhere, Brentford were also in action at home to a Championship side, as they hosted Sheffield Wednesday. Thomas Frank went with a strong team, though they were held to a 1-1 draw, as a second half equaliser cancelled out Kevin Schade’s opener. After nine perfect penalties, Liam Palmer missed for the visitors, and Brentford went through to the quarters.

Onto Wednesday night, where in the earlier kick off, Liverpool managed to overcome Brighton and Hove Albion with a 3-2 win at the Amex Stadium, despite their hosts fighting back twice. All three Liverpool goals came from their left-wingers, with a brace for Cody Gakpo, and a goal for Luis Diaz. Simon Adingra and Tariq Lamptey scored for Brighton.

In their first (and possibly last?) game under interim manager and club legend Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Manchester United saw off Leicester City with a 5-2 win at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro both scored braces, with Alejandro Garnacho also scoring. Bilal El Khannouss and Conor Coady netted for the visitors.

Crystal Palace continued their good week, as they beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Villa Park, with goals from Eberchi Eze and Daichi Kamada either side of a Jhon Duran goal. It was not all sunshine and rainbows for Oliver Glasner’s side, however, as Eze and Adam Wharton had to be withdrawn in the first half.
