Manchester United have come a long way since Erik ten Hag joined. Now, his unsung hero could commit his future to the club.

Since Erik ten Hag took charge at Manchester United in 2022, the club has come a long way. In many ways, he is proving to be one of the best managers since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club – He’s at least up there with Jose Mourinho.

However, there is one man who is under Erik ten Hag that doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He is the assistant manager who followed his senior from Ajax to Manchester United last year, Mitchell van der Gaag.

Unsung Manchester United hero Mitchell van der Gaag set to stay

Mitchell van der Gaag is being linked with the current Ajax opening, having left the club as assistant manager at the same time as Ten Hag. However, according to a report by The Athletic, the assistant manager is set to remain at Old Trafford to continue working under Erik ten Hag, despite the opening at his beloved Ajax.

This is great news for United. If they are to undergo this period of transition successfully, then they need a short-term, mid-term and long-term plan which everybody is on board with. Having a consistent manager and assistant manager setup throughout this period could be the decider, therefore it’s good that Mitchell van der Gaag is on board with the project.

Depending on what happens in the future, fans could even be looking at their future manager. Certainly, Van der Gaag has experience in working as the manager at various different clubs, although if there were to become a United opening, it would certainly be the biggest of his career to date.

Meanwhile, Neville has addressed a concern with Erik ten Hag’s signing.
