Manchester United are interested in signing a new midfielder in the January transfer window. This is due to Erik ten Hag wanting to replace his world-class star.

For Manchester United, things look pretty bleak right now. The Red Devils have started the season woefully and Erik ten Hag’s position as the Man United boss is under serious jeopardy. He needs to start climbing the table or the question of whether he should be sacked remains.

Although, it’s confusing as to why United are in this position. Not only have they spent a ridiculous amount of money over the last few seasons but they’ve inherited a squad full of world-class players. Therefore, Erik ten Hag doesn’t really have an excuse.

Particularly the midfield, which is United’s strongest areas. The strongest midfield trio of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes is one of the best in the world, with all three players within the world-class calibre or thereabouts.

Manchester United could replace Casemiro with Joao Neves

The former player, Casemiro, is subject to transfer news today. The Brazil international is reported to regret the decision to sign for Manchester United. Therefore, it’s likely that Man United will seek his replacement. According to El Nacional (via 90min), the Old Trafford club is considering the signing of Joao Neves from Benfica as a long-term replacement for the ageing Casemiro.

Casemiro is a legend of the game and his career should never be questioned. However, the step-down from Real Madrid to Manchester United in 2022 was a low-point in his career. I understand the factors behind the move but he could’ve moved to a club which would challenge prestigious silverware, not the Carabao Cup. Anyway, as his own harshest critic, Casemiro knows in hindsight this was the wrong move.

Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag has been told he must pay £60m for his chief transfer target.

Do you think Casemiro has been a hit or miss at Manchester United?
