Manchester United will soon shift their attention to strengthening Erik ten Hag’s defence. Saying that, a Harry Maguire upgrade has been shortlisted.

Manchester United will still be active during this international break. Given their poor start to the season, Erik ten Hag is aware he’ll be walking on eggshells from now until January. With that in mind, the Dutch manager has compiled a shortlist of targets to improve his chances of keeping the job at Old Trafford beyond this season.

Manchester United target Goncalo Inacio to upgrade Harry Maguire

According to a report from The Mirror, Manchester United have added the 22-year-old defender Goncalo Inacio to their shortlist of defensive targets. It’s thought that Erik ten Hag could attempt to sign the Portugal international from Sporting Lisbon, as he seeks an upgrade for Harry Maguire.

Understandably so, some Manchester United fans are confused as to why Maguire is still at the club. He had the opportunity to leave in the summer, but the move never went ahead. At the start of this season, he’s had some shaky moments, and in all honesty, the Red Devils look much better without him.

Since Maguire is in action for England (don’t ask me how), this is the perfect opportunity for Erik ten Hag to consider his replacement in summer. Also, with Jonny Evans on a one-year deal, the importance of bringing in at least one young defender is tenfold.

Inacio is considered to be one of the best young players in the world, so much so that Sporting won’t let go of him easily. He ages at 22 years old but plays with maturity and integrity, making him the ideal candidate to strengthen the Old Trafford back line for years to come.

In other news, Erik ten Hag aims to complete this deal with a defender ASAP.

Do you think Manchester United will sign Goncalo Inacio from Sporting Lisbon?
