“Top club mentality”: Harry Kane compares Bayern Munich to Tottenham

Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich helped Tottenham Hotspur enter a new era of their club. Spurs fans will hope, under the management of Ange Postecoglou, that the club can perform in a completely different way than they have in the past. While it is unfair to say the club’s gameplan was always “pass the ball to Harry Kane,” he was the focal point of Tottenham for some time. While the loss of such a talented player hurts, it has allowed Tottenham to see if they can generate success elsewhere.

Before England’s match against Ukraine, Harry Kane gave a huge quote when comparing playing for Bayern Munich and Tottenham. Via Fabrizio Romano:

"“We wanted to win at Spurs but if you went a couple of games without winning it wasn’t a disaster. At Bayern you have to win every game. After winning 3-1 and 4-0 first two games… there was talk about not being too happy about way we played! Top club mentality”."

This has long been a problem at Tottenham and has contributed to their dry run of spell at trying to win a trophy. Many will remember not long ago when former Spurs manager Antonio Conte called out the club for a very similar reason, saying the standards are not high enough and that things don’t change. Tottenham’s last trophy win was in 2008 when they beat London rivals Chelsea in the League Cup, then named the Carling Cup.

The difference in mentality between Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur was also likely a deciding factor in Kane’s decision to leave North London. The English striker can’t be free of blame, though; he’s had his own share of moments of failure both with Spurs and the Three Lions. Spurs fans have also let their feelings on the quote be known, believing that their once-star striker played a part in Spurs not having a ‘top club’ mentality.
