Jurgen Klopp rightly gets a lot of credit for the trophy success Liverpool has had over the last five years. The Reds have nearly won it all under their German manager: the Premier League title, the EFL and FA Cups, the Club World Cup, the FA Community Shield and, of course, the Champions League. The only trophy missing, in recent memory, is the UEFA Super Cup.

One name who departed the club just last summer and created a lot of fond memories at the club in recent times is Michael Edwards. The football executive was formerly the sporting director of the Reds, largely responsible for the transfer incomings and outgoings at the club. Edwards oversaw the massive transfers that brought the likes of Virgil Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Fabinho and Alisson to Anfield. Edwards departed Anfield after his contract expired on June 30, 2022.

The Athletic is now reporting that alongside former Liverpool research director Ian Graham, Edwards will be a director of Graham’s football advisory company, Ludonautics. The group will work as a consultant for clubs and owners from around the footballing world. The Athletic’s reporting of the situation also states that Michael Edwards had been in contact with Chelsea since his departure from Liverpool but did not pursue the opportunity. The report further touches on the fact that Edwards has shied away from multiple chances to join clubs in hopes of joining and recreating his success at Liverpool.

Liverpool’s direct replacement for Edwards is Jorg Schmadtke. The German football executive joined Wolfsburg earlier this year and helped the club bring players such as Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai this past transfer window. Before his long tenure as a sporting director, Edwards was previously a technical director and chief analyst at Liverpool. He’s also held the latter position at Tottenham and Portsmouth in the past.
