Newcastle United haven’t had a good start to the 2023/24 Premier League campaign. Granted, they’ve faced tough competition so far but to pick up only three points from a possible 12 is utterly unacceptable from a side who should be pushing for top four football.

Last season, Eddie Howe gave Newcastle fans a season to remember. They defied all expectations and finished fourth in the Premier League, which was an overachievement for sure but it was warranted given the incredible performances they put in a consistent basis.

One of the main tactical configurations which has helped Newcastle to become a feared club once again is the defence. Eddie Howe has implemented a tight defence which forms a low block and was the toughest defence to break down last season. Admittedly, Newcastle has always had a good defence, Howe just made it better.

Speaking of the defence at St James Park, their captain and beloved defender Jamaal Lascelles is linked with a move away. According to Teamtalk, Lascelles is targeted by the Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab.

Given that Lascelles has fallen further down the pecking order given the fine performances of his fellow teammates, this move could tempt him. We must also bear in mind that Lascelles is 29 years old so entering his peak as a defender. To not be picking up game time at this stage in his career is worrying.

From Eddie Howe’s perspective, this isn’t a move that would detriment his season in any way. Of course, it’s too late to sign a replacement as the English market is closed, so that will annoy him but I don’t think he’ll be put off allowing this transfer to happen.

Do you think Newcastle United should sell Jamaal Lascelles to the Saudi Pro League?
