Liverpool moving closer to signing fantastic Manchester United target
By Evan Curnew
It’s been a hard week for Liverpool as they failed to sign either Moises Caicedo or Romeo Lavia. At different points, the club were favourites to sign each player, but they have now both landed at Chelsea. John W. Henry and Co. have returned to square one on signing a new defensive midfielder. As The Top Flight has covered recently, recent reports linked the Reds to PSV’s Ibrahim Sangare, but the Reds may be signing another player with Dutch connections.
According to Netherlands website AD, Liverpool is in advanced negotiations to sign Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina. AD reports that Liverpool only began to be interested in signing Amrabat very recently, likely following the denial of the signing of Caicedo or Lavia. Manchester United are massive admirers of Amrabat, while the likes of Atletico Madrid are also following his situation, according to the Dutch site. It is believed that a deal will be wrapped up in the coming days.
Fabrizio Romano has chimed in on the situation to say that while things maybe aren’t advanced as AD suggests, Liverpool is absolutely interested in Sofyan Amrabat. They have been in contact with Fiorentina to understand what it would take to sign the Moroccan midfielder. No bid has been launched yet, according to Romano, and Liverpool is still assessing the market for a defensive midfielder.
Regardless of how close a bid is, Liverpool may have a legitimate shot at signing Sofyan Amrabat, given Manchester United has stalled talks recently with Fiorentina. As The Top Flight has covered, Manchester United has begun to look at Everton’s Amadou Onana as an alternative to signing Amrabat.
Born and raised in the Netherlands, Sofyan Amrabat represents Morocco on the international stage and was a star player at the most recent World Cup. Arambat has spent his last three seasons playing with Fiorentina in Serie A and has formerly played for Dutch sides FC Utrecht and Feyenoord.
