Liverpool could also miss out on Romeo Lavia to Chelsea despite having transfer agreement
By Evan Curnew
After a fantastic saga that fans of every team what was happening next, Chelsea beat out Liverpool for the signing of Moises Caicedo. At one point, it looked as if the Reds were close to sealing a transfer for the Ecuadorian midfielder until he made it known he only wanted Chelsea. After a couple of days of negotiations, Chelsea have now had a bid accepted by Brighton.
That has now turned the attention back to Romeo Lavia, who, over a week ago, was only wanted by the Reds until Chelsea stepped into the picture. Chelsea had recently made a £55m bid for Romeo Lavia, and it looked likely he was to join Pochettino’s side.
Now, we may be back in the midst of another bidding war as reports have surfaced that Southampton has accepted a £60m bid from Liverpool for Romeo Lavia. Remember, before this all kicked off, Southampton had only wanted £50m, which Liverpool was originally unwilling to meet. The Guardian was the first to break the news of Liverpool’s accepted bid, but they also share some information that will be worrying to Liverpool fans. It is believed that Romeo Lavia may prefer a move to Chelsea, which is also backed up by the Evening Standard’s Nizaar Kinsella.
Should Chelsea want to sign Romeo Lavia, which they do, they will have to, at the very least, match Liverpool’s accepted bid of £60m. It feels unlikely Liverpool will look to outbid Chelsea again should their offer to Southampton be matched. Given the reports of Lavia preferring a move to Chelsea, it may be time to call it quits and start to look at other midfield targets. As The Top Flight has covered, PSV’s Ibrahim Sangare is now being linked as someone on the club’s midfielder shortlist for Lavia & Caicedo alternatives.
