Newcastle could let fan favourite go in order to sign Harvey Barnes
By Evan Curnew
Newcastle United is expected to have a busy summer with an upcoming Champions League campaign. The club has already signed Yankuba Minteh and Sando Tonali. It is now being reported that Leicester’s Harvey Barnes is expected to be the club’s next summer signing. A deal isn’t finalized, but all signs point to the English winger moving to the Toons. Current Newcastle forward Allan Saint-Maximin, may be a victim of the incoming transfer.
While it is obvious since the Saudi takeover funds are not a problem for Newcastle, Financial Fairplay Rules may be. As such, it is now being reported by The Telegraph that Newcastle may sell Allan Saint-Maximin, who Harvey Barnes will replace. The Telegraph also reports that selling Saint-Maximin may help the club sign Southampton’s Tino Livramento. The fullback is a target for the club, but Southampton is asking for at least £30M.
It is being reported that Saudi Pro League clubs are eyeing a potential move for Allan Saint-Maximin. As many know, the Public Investment Fund, which owns Newcastle, recently took over Al Hilal, Al-Ittihad, Al Nassr and Al Ahli. Telegraph’s Luke Edwards states that teams across Europe have also spoken to the French winger since the end of the 22/23 Premier League season. A deal for Saint-Maximin could be had for in the £40M range.
Saint-Maximin joined Newcastle in 2019 from Ligue 1 side Nice. Before the takeover, Saint-Maximin was, generally speaking, seen as the best player at Newcastle, but he has seen his role at the club severely reduced. Now with even more top signings expected, Saint-Maximin may be frozen out of the squad if he is not sold this summer.
Incoming Harvey Barnes enjoyed a positive season despite Leicester’s relegation to the Championship. Barnes netted 13 goals and picked up an assist along the way. Barnes, in total, has 60 goal contributions in 146 Premier League matches. He has just two years left on his contract and is expected to cost around £40M for Newcastle to sign.
