Jonathan David: An Ideal Kane Replacement

The soap opera around Harry Kane’s future continues with Manchester United ready to snap up the England captain. If Kane leaves, the move could fetch Tottenham easily upwards of €100 million. A wise option would be to reinvest the money gained with the potential sale of Kane in purchasing Lille’s Jonathan David.

David’s tally of 24 league goals in 2022-23 was surpassed only by Alexandre Lacazette and Kylian Mbappe. His non-penalty xG+xA of 0.6 per 90 falls marginally short of Kane (0.63) and is more than Richarlison (0.49) and even Marcus Rashford (0.59) and Ivan Toney (0.56) in the Premier League. David also makes 39 carries into the penalty box which trounces those of Kane (21) and Richarlison (13).

Like Kane, David also has the ability to drop deep to link up play, qualities that would help to involve the likes of Son and Kulusevski on the wings. Playing David as the sole striker or as a second striker, either along with or in behind Richarlison when required. also unlocks new options in possession and on the press for Ange Postecoglou.

The 42-capped Canadian won’t be cheap with two years remaining on his deal and a market value of €60 million. But the numbers stated above along with his maturity, versatility and goal threat make him a great prospect for the North London club along with the duo of Le Fée and Disasi.
