Axel Disasi: An Answer To Spurs’ Defensive Woes

Spurs conceded 63 goals in the league last season, six more than relegation-threatened Everton. As a result, their defence is sure to undergo a lot of change under Ange Postecoglou. One player they should target is AS Monaco star Axel Disasi.

The 25-year-old has become a mainstay in the club’s ranks since moving from Reims in 2020 and is at the right age and level to make a switch to the Premier League. Disasi predominantly plays on the right of a two-man centre-back line and would be an able partner for Clement Lenglet (if the loan move is made permanent) or Ben Davies and an obvious upgrade on Davinson Sanchez and Cristian Romero.

Disasi’s numbers this season indicate a player who shows immense confidence both on the ball and off it with,

  • 5.8 progressive passes per game – 96th percentile among defenders in Europe
  • 1.7 progressive carries per game – 96th percentile among defenders in Europe
  • 2.5 tackles + interceptions per game
  • 2.54 aerial duels won per 90 – 70.3% aerial success rate (higher than any Spurs defender)

The France international also makes more blocks (51) and his 48.1% tackle success rate ranks him above Eric Dier and Clement Lenglet in the side.

Disasi can improve on his passing accuracy of 83.3%, but his long pass completion rate of 61.5% is more than any Spurs’ defender. Stats like these showcase his ability to build from the back and add to his team’s offensive gameplay. He combines defensive solidity, physicality and prowess along with his spatial awareness, distribution and ability to add to the attack whenever needed.  Disasi’s 0.57 take-ons per 90 rank him in the top 93rd percentile of defenders in Europe.

The Frenchman has two years remaining on his deal and has a market value of around €25-30 million which makes him an ideal and cost-effective addition to Tottenham.
