It’s easy to pinpoint where it’s gone wrong for Chelsea this season. If we ignore all their embarrassing shenanigans off the pitch, tactically it is the fault of the attackers. Playing under three different managers this season, none of them were able to pinpoint the right attacking formula.
In truth, Chelsea don’t have an out-and-out striker who can compete with the likes of Erling Haaland and Harry Kane in getting 20+ or even 30+ goals a season. For context, their top goal scorer in the Premier League this season was Kai Havertz, who scored a measly 7 goals. Not good enough, and it shows why they finished 12th in the league.
Although, in truth, this is not a new issue for Chelsea. In fact, it’s an issue which has been brewing for some time. They have not had a truly world-class striker for some time now. They may have tried to some, but the recruitment was poor enough that they turned world-class strikers into nobodies.
I did some research into this and was shocked myself to find out that Chelsea haven’t had a player score 20+ goals in the Premier League since Diego Costa in 2016/17.
That is absolutely ridiculous. I get that goals should come from all areas of the pitch in this era, but every team has their main source of goals coming from one person. With the exception of Arsenal this season (who have scored from all areas of the pitch), each team in the Premier League has that one person they turn to for goals.
In truth, Chelsea never did replace Diego Costa. He’s the best striker they’ve had in some time and it will take a lot to replace him. However, with talks that they are targeting the likes of Victor Osimhen and Harry Kane, this could be rectified by investing heavily in this position.
