Premier League Awards Season: Who takes home the end of season honors?
By Ivan Buss
Barclay’s Manager of the Season: Roberto de Zerbi
Nominees: Roberto De Zerbi, Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta, Eddie Howe, Unai Emery, Marco Silva
This is an incredibly tough decision, and admittedly my feelings might change depending on what Manchester City and Pep Guardiola can do in the FA Cup final. However, as of now, I’m choosing the man at the helm for Brighton. De Zerbi took charge of Brighton in October after Graham Potter left for Chelsea, but quickly made an impression among the squad and has had them playing a delightful brand of football.
After their draw with Manchester City earlier this week, they have secured Europa League football, a feat even the loftiest dreamers at Brighton might not have imagined. With wins over Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United, and all but ending Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes, his resume this season is superb.
While I’m not confident he will be chosen for this award, this is my pick. When you get praised by one of the other coaches on this list, it definitely should not go unnoticed.
EA Sports Player of the Season: Erling Haaland (Manchester City)
Nominees: Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, Kieran Trippier, Martin Ødegaard, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford
It has to be Haaland. In his first season in this league, coming from a league that many refer to as a farmers league, he made the Premier League look like a farmer’s league. Seriously, 36 goals and counting in his debut season, are you kidding me?! His numbers this year have been simply outrageous, and he is still just 22 years old, a scary thought for any defender.
He is set to win the Golden Boot award, well ahead of Harry Kane, and has to be the winner for both this Premier League award, as well as the PFA Players Player of the Year. He already won FWA Player of the Year, with more than 80% of the vote which is the highest ever in the award’s history!
There is simply little case for anybody but Haaland winning this award given the season he has had, and what still remains on the table for him before the season is finished. He has taken this league by storm and established that his talents were not tied to the league he played in prior to arriving on England’s shores, rather clearly demonstrating his goal-scoring abilities can translate to the Premier League as well.
