Harry Kane – Where does the England striker’s future lie?
By Phil Taylor
This will more than likely be the saga of the summer with Harry Kane’s Tottenham Hotspur future up in the air. There has been no secret surrounding where his potential future away from Spurs may lie but there are varying comments about what is down the road for the skipper.
There are three options that are here for Kane and two would immediately affect him this summer. So what are they?
Stay with Spurs
This is the one that appeals most to Tottenham fans and one that could be the option that Kane takes. Having flirted with Manchester City last year and opted to stay for another year with his boyhood club (depending on what reports you believe), the Champions decided to go with Erling Haaland. However, it showed that Spurs would have to do more to keep the England striker; this was not the case this season.
With managerial changes left, right and centre, there has been no stability at Tottenham whatsoever. A whimper in all cup competitions did little to convince anyone that Spurs were genuinely going to end their trophy-less hoodoo.
The only real pull for Harry Kane would be an exciting new manager appointment. With Arne Slot, the league-winning Feyenoord manager, expected to arrive in London at the end of the season there is speculation that Kane could well stay on and give it another go at Spurs.
Move to Manchester United
It is no secret that Manchester United is looking for a new striker and the one name that keeps cropping up is Harry Kane. The 29-year-old is a seemingly perfect fit for Manchester United but even with one year on his contract, he will not come cheap.
Kane is the prolific goalscorer that United needs with a significant reliance on Marcus Rashford to find the goals for the Red Devils. With Kane through the middle, Rashford on the left and either Anthony or Jadon Sancho on the right, United could be a force in the 2023/24 season.
United have stated they will not be dragged into a tug of war with Daniel Levy and with a quoted £100 million for the England striker it could end up with Kane staying with Spurs for another season.
Stay with Spurs but leave on a free
The transfer fee for a player with only one year left on his contract could well be a stumbling block and could be detrimental to Spurs. Harry Kane could well say he will give one more to Spurs as a loyal player but then leave on a free in the summer of 2024.
With the prolific striker turning 30 in July, he would be on the “wrong side” of 30 come the following summer as he prepares to play in the European Championship with England…hopefully.
However, this summer feels like it is a pivotal one for Harry Kane and if he did not move this summer he will more than likely see out the rest of his career with Spurs.
