Chelsea identify £40M Serie A star to replace Kepa or Mendy

Chelsea is expected to sign a new number-one keeper this summer and Andre Onana seems to be their top target
According to the Telegraph’s Matt Law, Chelsea has to put themselves in a position to sign Inter Milan keeper Andre Onana this summer. Additionally, the club has confidence that they can reach a deal to sign Onana. There is a belief that a deal can be completed in the £40M range.
Chelsea have made Kepa Arrizabalaga the number one this season but it was not long ago that was Edouard Mendy’s spot. Suffice it to say, Chelsea does not have a long-term regular number-one keeper, and hope that Andre Onana can become that.
Despite Chelsea’s troubles, Kepa’s 9 clean sheets in 25 matches are actually not bad. With that said, it has become a common theme that Todd Boehly and Chelsea are aiming to build upon their ‘project’. As reported by The Top Flight earlier this week, Chelsea has identified a new keeper as a priority this summer.
Both Kepa and Mendy have two years each left on their contracts. So, there will have to be a decision for one of them to leave next season to make room for Onana.
Andre Onana has spent just a single season with Inter Milan. His current contract still runs until 2027 which means Inter will have a lot of leverage in any potential deal. Onana joined the Italian side for free last summer, ending a 7-year spell at Dutch giants Ajax. Onana is a former La Masia academy product but never made an appearance for Barcelona. Onana was born in Cameroon and was identified by Barcelona after being a part of Samuel Eto’o’s foundation academy.
Should Chelsea make Andre Onana their number-one keeper for next season? Who will leave between Kepa and Mendy to make room?
