Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be heading to MLS
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang suffered a blow in his Chelsea career when he was left out of their Champions League squad. However, there could be a way out of Stamford Bridge with the Gabonese forward linked with a move to MLS.
Aubameyang was not involved in Chelsea’s last match against Fulham and was then pictured in Milan. His future on Graham Potter’s side looks to be coming to an end.
Relevo have reported that Los Angeles FC and Chelsea, “are in talks for the transfer of the former Barcelona player.” Aubameyang was linked with a return to Barcelona. Although, he would not be able to be registered for the same team twice in one season.
Aubameyang’s time at Chelsea has not gone to plan, he was signed by Thomas Tuchel who knew him from their time together at Borussia Dortmund. But shortly after his arrival, Tuchel was sacked and his record at the club is 17 games with three goals and one assist.
Would LAFC be a good fit for Aubameyang?
LAFC are the current MLS Cup champions. They won the tournament thanks to a last-minute goal from Gareth Bale in the final against the Philadelphia Union. Bale has now retired and is now spending even more time on the golf course.
The Welshman’s departure leaves a designated player spot at the club, which could be filled by Aubameyang. Christian Tello was another designated player who has now left the club to join the Saudi Arabian side, Al Fateh, so LAFC is in need of a star-signing at their club.
Aubameyang would also be reunited with fellow Gabonese international Denis Bouanga at the club. The forward is now 33, so is coming to the end of his career and it could be a good time to leave European football.
Is it time for Aubameyang to leave Europe?
Aubameyang has had a career that has seen him play for some of Europe’s biggest clubs. He has been at AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea.
Although he has never won a league title his honours include; the Coupe de la Ligue with Saint-Etienne, the DFB-Pokal with Dortmund and the FA Cup with the Gunners.
His recent career has been mixed after he was stripped of the Arsenal captaincy for disciplinary reasons by Mikel Arteta. Aubameyang’s departure from the club swiftly followed.
He rebuilt his reputation at Barcelona where he has a good record of 13 goals in 24 games. However, his move back to Chelsea has been a disaster.
Aubameyang is in his 30s now and a chance to join one of MLS’ top clubs would be a great opportunity for him at this stage of his career. Their transfer window closes on the 24th of April so there is time to get the deal done.
LAFC’s MLS campaign starts on 26th February against their city rivals LA Galaxy. They would want to get Aubameyang at their club for that fixture as Steve Cherundolo’s side look to assert their dominance in the El Trafico derby.
