Dan James of Leeds has been linked with a surprise move to Tottenham Hotspur who are looking for a replacement for Bryan Gil.

According to the Daily Mail:

"Tottenham are considering a surprise move for Leeds United winger Dan James as they prepare to replace Bryan Gil who is joining Valencia.Talks have not advanced as Spurs focus on trimming their squad after bringing in seven signings this summer. With the 21-year-old Spaniard likely headed back to LaLiga, Antonio Conte has been vocal about wanting to replace him, and James is a player who has drawn the interest of the north London club in the past."

James’ Career So Far

James was born in Kingston upon Hull and was part of Hull City’s academy before moving to Swansea City. He would go on to make 39 appearances for the Swans, scoring six times and creating ten assists. James also had a loan spell at Shrewsbury Town but failed to make an appearance for the club.

Whilst at the club he came very close to joining Leeds in January 2019 but the deal fell through at the last minute on deadline day. He eventually joined Manchester United that summer.

He played 74 times for the Red Devils with nine goals and nine assists. James then finally got his move to Leeds and has so far got four goals and five assists in 37 games for the Yorkshire side.

Is Moving From Leeds to Spurs Right for Him?

It would certainly be a step-up moving to Tottenham, who is in the Champions League this season. James only played twice in the European football’s premier competition whilst at Man United so would be desperate to show what he can do amongst the elite clubs on the continent.

However, the question he should ask is whether he would get enough game time if he were to make the move. Gil, who he would be replacing, only played nine times for Spurs and spent the second half of last season on loan at Valencia.

Game time would be crucial for James, who will be hoping to be a key part of the Wales side at the World Cup later this year. Robert Pages’ is in a group with England, Iran and the USA. He currently has 34 caps for his country and has scored five times.

On Antonio Conte’s side, he would be competing with the likes of Son Heung-min, Ivan Perišić and Dejan Kulusevski for a starting place.

After leaving Old Trafford he would have ambitions to move to a team that competes further up the table and has European football. Although Spurs and Leeds are currently on equal points of seven so far in the league. However, we are only three games in.

Jesse Marsch has had a fantastic start to the season with Leeds and it is an exciting time to be at the club but moving to Spurs would be more ambitious for James. He must choose to be at a club that will get him into the best shape possible heading into the World Cup in Qatar this November.
