Patson Daka and Leicester City in 2020-21: A mixed return

Joining a club of Leicester’s stature, a lot was expected of the 23-year-old to recreate his exploits with RB Salzburg, which made heads turn. He made his debut off the bench in Leicester’s famous 1-0 win against Manchester City in the Community Shield.

Daka also scored his opening goal against Manchester United in an exciting 4-2 home win over the record champions, but both the striker and the club faced a stumbling season. Despite multiple injuries in the squad, Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers never saw Daka as a primary choice of goals in the side.

As a result, he only featured in 23 Premier League games, while playing 38 games in all competitions. Daka was conceived as a player more suited to continental adventures.

This then led to them only using him in 10 games across the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Europa Conference League. He tallied six goals across the two competitions as he led Leicester City to the semi-finals of the latter competition. Overall, Daka tallied 11 goals in 38 games in all competitions.

Leicester City themselves had an underwhelming season by their quality. The club finished 8th in the Premier League, crashed out in the fourth round of the FA Cup having won the trophy the previous year, and also ended their League Cup campaign in the quarterfinals. Their run to the Europa Conference League semi-finals would rather give some semblance of respectability to their campaign.

But having finished the previous season in 5th and just one point off the Champions League spot, a lot more would have been expected of the Foxes and their new striking recruit.
