After David Ornstein of the Athletic stated a deal was in the works for Everton to sign Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet, it appeared a matter of when not if the Ivorian winger would make the switch.

At the time of the report, Ornstein stated the blue half of Merseyside was the most likely destination, but the goalposts may have shifted in the week since.

Following the preliminary talks, Everton had an official proposal of a loan with an option to buy subject to the club staying up rejected, as per the Sun.

Burnley want the money upfront as they prepare to return to the top-flight with immediate effect and a price tag of £18m has been listed.

Cornet could serve as a replacement for Richarlison but his profile owes more to a winger despite partnering towering centre forward Wout Weghorst as a second striker at times last season.

The concern is that Everton’s initial rebuff could trigger other potential suitors to make their move. There is a list of clubs supposedly interested and Burnley’s inclination to sell leaves a clear route to the player’s signature.

Versatility is an asset of the 25-year-old’s that could prove a welcome addition for Lampard in 2022/23 and in my opinion, they should still be considered the favourites to get the deal over the line.
