Tottenham Hotspur are set to fight Everton, Brentford, West Ham and Fulham for the signature of a winger who was relegated last season.

The player in question is none other than Burnley’s star boy Dwight McNeil. An integral part of Burnley’s first team, following relegation, McNeil’s future at the club became uncertain.

The 22-year-old has been linked to various clubs in the past including Manchester United, Manchester City, Juventus and Leicester City. But he stayed at Burnley despite the links.

Now, with Burnley getting relegated to the second tier of English football, McNeil will be looking to leave for a move to a Premier League club in order to not waste some of the best years of his career.

Tottenham target Dwight McNeil’s 2021/22 campaign

McNeil struggled for Burnley last season, playing 3107 minutes giving only 1 assist. However, some of his underlying stats do show promise.

He averaged around 0.75 crosses into the penalty area per 90 (94 percentile in Europe among wingers), while also averaging 2.72 switches per 90, showcasing his ability to switch play.

His defensive work is also strong for a winger as he intercepts 1.13 passes per 90 on average. He also attempts around 1.97 tackles and puts around 6.87 pressures in the defensive third per 90.

His strong defensive game and ability to put crosses into the penalty box exhibit his capability of operating as a wing-back, something that would benefit Tottenham immensely.

West Ham and Newcastle in pole position

However, according to sources, West Ham and Newcastle are in pole position to the sign the Englishman and Tottenham will need to fight them for his signature.

"As for McNeil, Howe is believed to have seen the 22-year-old winger as a summer target even before Burnley’s relegation to the Championship. Now that they are in the second tier, Newcastle are looking at his situation and considering next steps – although 90min understands that Tottenham, Everton, Brentford, West Ham and Fulham have also asked about him.via 90min.com"

Tottenham have been linked with a number of attackers in the upcoming summer transfer window. This includes players like Lautaro Martinez and Yannick Carrasco. They have also been linked with a move for ex-Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen.

On the other hand, they have already acquired the signings of Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster.

Now the question that arises right now is will Tottenham be able to afford Mcneil if a high-priced signing like Lautaro Martinez or Yannick Carrasco arrives at the White Hart Lane.

Burnley set Dwight McNeil price tag

According to Mail Sport, Burnley have put a £40m price tag on McNeil, which makes it tough for a club like Tottenham to sign him on top of signing someone like Martinez.

"Burnley will demand a huge £40million for Dwight McNeil in the transfer window, according to reports. The 22-year-old winger has several Premier League suitors, with the likes of Everton, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa all vying after his signature.via Dailymail.co.uk"
