There has been so much going on in the football world right now. There are trophies being lifted, managers being sacked, managers leaving, managers coming back to old clubs. That last bit is related to Mauricio Pochettino and Tottenham

There are rumours that Mauricio Pochettino wants to go back to Tottenham.

I don’t really know how much truth there is to that story, but I do know one thing: Pochettino should not go back to Tottenham.

There are so many reasons why Pochettino should stay in Paris. Let’s look at it from two perspectives.

Pochettino hasn’t been a PSG coach for even a full season

Yes, his first season at PSG wasn’t a successful one. He helped PSG lift the cup, but they finished second in the league and got knocked out of the Champions League in the semi-finals. But, that’s not a reason to leave the club. Want to know why?

He joined in January. He hasn’t really had a full season at PSG, he hasn’t had a chance to buy players he likes/ sell ones he doesn’t. There hasn’t been a summer window for him to do that.

We know that the PSG board usually backs the managers in terms of transfers, so I would assume that he’d get the signings he wants, and will be able to take the title back from Lille, and maybe make an even deeper run in the Champions League.

We’ve all seen in the past: He’s a manager who takes his time with things, but he makes those things so much better than they were before he picked them up. If he gets the kind of players he wants, the squad improves so much as a whole.

Now, think about it from another perspective.

Would he really get the backing of the owner of Tottenham?

I really doubt it.

Keep in mind, he spent years at Tottenham trying to make a great team. The current one is a lot worse than that. With so many rumours about Kane potentially leaving the club, you can already tell the team will lose a lot of quality. They’ll have to replace Kane but somehow improve at the same time. That’s nearly impossible.

Would he really want to do another rebuild at the same club that he took to the Champions League final? I don’t know. That requires a lot of time, luck (in terms of finding talented players in the academy) and a lot of other things. Tottenham will be stuck in the same loop. Pochettino will be stuck in the same loop,

Besides, do you want to rebuild so that you try to get back to that stage, or do you improve and go one further, win some titles?

I think it’s time for the latter. And for that to happen, Levy will NEED to give the next manager freedom to spend on the players that he thinks are right for the club.

If Pochettino joins and he’s given the funds he needs, then sure, by all means. I just think that the likelihood of that happening is far too low for him to leave his current job.

I think Poch knows it too. There’s just no point in being stuck in the same loop. Doing things the same way in a second stint will not make the team much better than they were in the first. If Levy doesn’t want that to happen, then he needs to open the chequebook. You can’t have it both ways.
