Manchester City are having an amazing season. They’re on track to creating history as they seek their first treble. They won the Carabao Cup, are already Premier League champions with three games to go, and are also in the Champions League final for the first time in club history.

They’re doing it all while having the best defense and offense in the Premier League.

Their defense, especially, has been really, really important for them this season. One of the team’s veterans, who had a major role to play in all their recent title-winning seasons is Fernandinho. The 35-year-old has been super reliable every time he has been asked to be there in the team.

We saw the peak of his versatility last season, in which he played as a centre-back many times due to injuries/shortage of reliable centre-backs in the team. But, now with the purchase of Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake, that need has gone down a little bit.

But Fernandinho still is a very experienced and intelligent player, which is why, according to reports, Manchester City are looking to offer him a new contract.

Does it make sense for Manchester City to offer a 36-year-old Fernandinho a new contract?

More from Manchester City

On Tuesday, Fabrizio Romano tweeted out that Manchester City want the Brazilian midfielder to stay at the club. They want to offer him a contract which would be extending his period of stay by another year.

In my opinion, it makes sense on some levels and it doesn’t on some others. Let’s start off with the negatives first.

The main downside of having Fernandinho at the club is his wage and the fact that he’s already 36 years old. If he’s taking a wage cut / continuing on the same wage, that’s still fine, but if it’s a little more then I’d probably have to disagree with the decision.

There are of course, positives too. He brings forth a lot of experience, which is something that no one else really has in his position.

The Brazilian a really good defensive midfielder and can even act as back-up to Rodri if he ever gets injured, or if one of the centre-backs are injured, he can be called upon.

Although, I doubt that would be the case given the abundance of centre-backs that Manchester City now have at their disposal.

If you think about it, at his age, there are many players who move to a country like USA or Qatar, and play out the rest of their career and make a little more money than usual. But, Fernandinho’s not doing that. He’s staying in Europe, which is really impressive.

If Fernandinho wants to continue at the club, then it shows that he’s still not done with being competitive and winning elite trophies. That’s the kind of mentality that you want to have.
