FPL Captain Pick #5 Trent Alexander-Arnold vs Newcastle (H)

It’s not often that you see defenders being mentioned as captaincy options. But, this is Trent we are talking about here. If you were an active FPL player last season, you might remember his remarkable explosiveness and consistency.

He has been a shadow of that version of Trent as an FPL asset, but he has massively picked it up in the last few weeks, making him an excellent option.

The fact that at the start of the season 7.5 was considered a bargain for him says it all. It looks like he is finally living up to that price tag and looks like a great player to own for the rest of the season.

Trent has picked up maximum bonus points (3) from each of his last four games. He managed this feat while Liverpool just kept two clean sheets in those four games. The number of chances he is creating at the moment is staggering. It’s incredible even for an attacker, let alone a defender!

What’s good about him as a captaincy option is that he doesn’t need to do much to haul big, an attacking return with a clean sheet can do the trick. There is a clear motivation for him to end the season on a high with an England spot at the Euros’ up for grabs.

Newcastle have improved a lot with the return of Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson from injury. Even then, Liverpool do have a decent chance of securing a clean sheet here.

According to the GW33 CS odds (via @FPL_Salah), Liverpool have a 54% probability of keeping a clean sheet this GW which is bettered only by Leicester City(56%).

That, coupled with Trent’s potential for attacking returns makes him an enticing option with potential for returns on both ends of the pitch while also being a bonus magnet.
