Tottenham: Bad news for Manchester clubs in pursuit of Harry Kane

Top Premier League clubs like Manchester United and Manchester City would’ve surely been on the lookout for a potential Harry Kane deal next season, considering reports about how he might leave if Tottenham don’t qualify for the Champions League next season. Because of the game against Manchester United on Sunday, that seems even more unlikely.

But, unfortunately for the top English clubs, according to a report from The Athletic, selling Harry Kane to a team from the Premier League is the last thing that Tottenham would be willing to do.

Daniel Levy, the owner of Tottenham, would not listen to any offers from Premier League clubs under any circumstances. To be honest, I wouldn’t necessarily blame him for it, from Tottenham’s standpoint. But, that’s just one standpoint, you know?

Why it does and does not make sense for Tottenham to not listen to offers for Harry Kane from English clubs

It makes sense because, think about it: Why would Daniel Levy want to give out the biggest asset to a rival, which will definitely increase the gap between that club and Tottenham, sending the Spurs further down the power rankings for the Premier League? A direct rival’s gain is Tottenham’s loss. But, this decision also does one thing that’s not exactly in favour of Tottenham:

If you remove ALL Premier League clubs out of the Harry Kane equation, it removes a large chunk of the market that can actually afford Harry Kane. Because, honestly, even the biggest clubs in the world have been hit terribly due to COVID-19 in an economical sense. Which clubs in Europe right now can really afford Harry Kane’s excellent, although expensive services?

More from Tottenham Hotspur

There are obviously clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona who are not really in a state to go for a player that is at the age of 27 but will cost over 150 million euros. Yes, big national banks usually support top clubs a lot, but would a club like Real Madrid spend that much on a player who only has four to five more years left on the top level?

Keep in mind, that’s not a bad shout, four years is a long time, but I feel like they would much rather have someone like Haaland, who’s although less proven than Harry Kane, but is much younger and would be at the top level for a long time.

Are there any other clubs that might be able to afford Harry Kane? Maybe PSG, but I’m not sure if PSG would want to go for him, considering how big of a wage bill they already have.

They have Mario Icardi (or sometimes Kylian Mbappe) in that position. Who would really be willing to sacrifice playing time for a new big-money signing? But, all things considered, on paper, they are one of the very few teams that can afford to buy Harry Kane.

One more thing: Ask the man himself! Would Harry Kane want to leave England? He’s been there all his life and all his career. He’s settled. His whole family is there. Moving bases all of a sudden and that too into a completely new country, and a completely new culture is a very difficult thing to do. Surely, Tottenham wouldn’t block his move to a Premier League club even then, right?

Maybe, they could ask a little more from Premier League sides. This is just a report anyway. There’s no real confirmation. But this is my take on the situation. What do you think about this decision by Tottenham? Let us know!
