One of the best parts of any Premier League season is seeing the most improved mid-table side. This season our choice is Everton.

One of the more interesting aspects to any Premier League season is seeing which mid-table club can push for Champions League places. Last season, those two teams were Wolves and Sheffield United.

But that now looks to be a one-time deal as both clubs have struggled this season. It’s tempting to name Leicester City, although at this point they should rightly be considered a top-level club. For this reason, I believe the most improved mid-table side this season should be Everton FC.

What has gone right for Everton and Carlo Ancelotti?

More from Everton

For starters, they managed to bring in a world-class manager in Carlo Ancelotti. He has brought a level of stability to the club since he was hired in 2019. Everton have also been more committed than ever to spend during the transfer windows.

Important deals for Ben Godfrey, Allan, Aboulaye Doucouré, and James Rodríguez have all made it over the line. These deals have done an immense job improving the Toffees’ squad depth. They have also seen marked improvement from some of the players already in the team.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin looks to be taking steps towards becoming a world-class striker. Richarlison also continues to be an important member of the attack.

Lucas Digne looks to be one of the top left-backs in the entire Premier League. All of this means that Everton looks to possibly be a serious contender for a Champions League spot.

What needs improvement at Goodison Park?

Just because Everton has been the most improved mid-table side doesn’t mean everything has gone to perfection. Outside of Calvert-Lewin, they have struggled to find another source of consistent goals.

That could be something to monitor as the season progresses. They could even possibly look to bring someone in during the January transfer window. Right-back could also be an area to improve as Everton will eventually need to replace Seamus Coleman.

Coleman has spent a portion of the current campaign injured, which forced Mason Holgate to move into the role at fullback. While it has worked out okay so far, any further injuries would throw a wrench into Everton’s plans.

Finally, the Merseysiders have been looking to possibly further strengthen their midfield in January. They are one of a few Premier League teams that have been linked with Sami Khedira. As Everton looks to fix some of their midfield woes; Khedira could end up an important signing.

Conclusion

Everton definitely has a shot at a Champions League place this season. As the most improved mid-table team, they should be looking to overtake some of the top clubs, especially their rivals who have struggled of late.

They are currently right on the heels of Liverpool, Leicester City, and Tottenham. With more consistency in results, there is no reason why Everton can’t look to cement themselves as one of the better Premier League teams.
