Manchester United triggers Jesse Lingard’s contract extension
By Varun Aithal
Despite having multiple players in midfield, Manchester United have triggered Jesse Lingard’s contract extension. Here is more news about it.
After losing consecutive home games and a poor display against Tottenham Hotspur, the fans and pundits were quick enough to sideline Manchester United and their manager from the title race.
However, the away wins and superior bench strength has helped the Red Devils to quickly turnaround things at the end of the year. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tricky Reds finds themselves in second place with a game in hand and three points behind rivals Liverpool.
Ahead of the January transfer window, few players like Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo are rumored to leave whereas the club is linked with the likes of Max Aarons and Jadon Sancho once again.
When it comes to contract extensions, Manchester United have triggered the 12-month extension in Jesse Lingard’s deal. The player’s contract was set to expire at the end of the ongoing season but now has a year lifeline added to it.

"Manchester United have triggered the one-year option in Jesse Lingard’s contract, amid growing speculation regarding his futureHowever, United have now exercised the option within his contract, keeping him tied to the Red Devils until at least the summer of 2022. (Via: Mirror)"
The 28-year-old has gone through a lot of injuries and has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford.
With the arrival of Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek, Lingard has no other option but to wait for his opportunity. In 2020/21, the player has featured just 99 minutes across two cup games and has only one start.
The English playmaker has struggled to make the bench in recent times for the Old Trafford outfit. With the club fearing to lose him on a Bosman transfer, therefore activating his clause. Jesse Lingard was rumored to join Real Sociedad on loan in the January transfer window. Plans could have changed now with this recent move.
When asked regarding the future of the 28-year-old during the summer transfer window, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said:
"He deserves his chance to come back in and we know his qualities. We know that Jesse’s got different qualities to other players and he knows that we value him.(Via: manutd.com)"
Last season, Lingard featured in various positions in attacking midfielder, as a striker, and as a winger on both flanks. Regrettably, the player found it extremely hard to hit the back of the net in the top-flight.
He scored on the final day of the season against Leicester City securing Champions League football for his team. Once again, the player is going through a rough patch and this time, the club will look to find a potential suitor for their academy graduate on a more permanent basis.
