The solid Premier League run might have hit a speed bump but Tottenham’s search for Carabao Cup gold is still well intact.
Jose Mourinho sleeps happily as the Spurs’ boss tonight after his side beat Stoke City at the windy and wet Bet365 Stadium 3-1 to advance to the next round of the EFL Cup.
Tottenham joins the already through Brentford and Manchester City, and now Manchester United as well after their win over Everton. How do we know Jose is very serious about this cup?
He named a very strong side to take on the Championship outfit. Gareth Bale was awarded a rare start and didn’t disappoint. He was the first on the scoresheet to give his side the lead with a deft touch.

The next goal only came 53 minutes into the clash and was the equaliser by Stoke – arguably the best team move for a goal for the entire game. From the goalkeeper to the frontline, it was an amazing team goal.
But the best came when Spurs put their second past, Andy Lonergan. Ben Davies belter from range was as truer strikes as they come. The third came through the persistent Harry Kane with 10 minutes left to play.
A good display and an expected victory with the team Jose Mourinho named to take on the second-tier club.
This is the fifth time the Special One has made it this far in the Carabao Cup and the last four occasions he has won the competition.
Sadly there is a major concern for the club and manager, Gareth Bale was subbed off at halftime and has been confirmed injured by Jose. They wait patiently for an update on how severe the issue is.
Spurs fight on all fronts
The objective for Jose this season? No less than a trophy or two. The good business completed during the summer window gave the North Londoners hope of this happening while it fed us the idea the Portuguese has all the tools to achieve some silverware.
They are well on course and fight on all fronts. A Carabao Cup semi-final after their Stoke City triumph and an advancement to the knockout stages of the Europa League (Round of 32).
The FA Cup is still coming, giving a side who hasn’t won a major trophy for the past 12 years enough chances to at least take one of the four they play for – with the league cup their best opportunity following their Brentford semi-final home draw.
Yes, they took a double hit in their Premier League run but the way the current campaign has conducted itself, there’s just no telling who will win the EPL crown in May.
They’ve dropped off by six points and into sixth place (on 25 points) after leading the pack for a good part of the season. But no need to despair with many matchdays left to play. Spurs will welcome Brentford to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first-leg encounter starting January 4.
