The world was left devastated on Wednesday to find out a God of football has left us in a sudden way. But as we mourn, Naples and the rest of world honour Diego Maradona, wondrously.

On Wednesday afternoon, it was confirmed by almost every news outlet across the globe, that we have lost Diego Maradona. Besides his family, the footballing world and all those he inspired were left dumbstruck by his passing.

Maradona was recently cleared healthy after successfully going under the knife. The World Cup winner underwent brain surgery for a subdural hematoma. This was not too long ago — about three weeks back.

It was a massive relief at the time to hear the operation was a great triumph. But now it is a pain to hear we have lost him to cardiac arrest, not long after just having him back from the subdural hematoma scare.

It was announced on Wednesday that one of the greatest number 10’s suffered a heart attack in his own home in Tigre, Buenos Aires, at the age of 60. Since the saddest news of the week, there has been nothing but heartfelt testimonies surrounding Maradona.

Argentina’s legends of the game have expressed their sympathy, as well as their pain while talking about their experiences with the football legend that is Maradona.

Both Ricardo Bochini (El Bocha) and Hernan Crespo (Valdanito) believes Argentina’s Ministro Pistarini International Airport, the main airport in the country, should be named after the great.

Bochini to on TyC Sports:

"The Argentine airport should be Diego Armando Maradona.Maradona made Argentina known across the world. While we are a beautiful country, we know that the World Cups are always seen all over the world and many know Argentina from Maradona."

An emotional Crespo sadly told ESPN:

"What Diego generated in me as a child, a teenager and after I grew up, as a professional … he has a lot to do with all of this. These have been two very difficult days. It is very difficult to train, talk to the boys, find words. We will try to honour him in the best way, which is by playing soccer, respecting his spirit of freedom, fun and a lot of commitment to where he is. We will try to do that. (Via: en.as.com)"

Over to Italy

In Naples, where Diego enjoyed seven years with Napoli while making 188 appearances for the club, they are talking about changing the name of their stadium from San Paolo stadium to the Diego Armando Maradona stadium.

The club doubled up in their Diego tribute in their latest European triumph. All the players ran out on the pitch with the number 10 jersey and his name “Maradona” on the back.

They made him proud on Thursday night when they took all the points and beat Croatian side HNK Rijeka 2-0 at home. It was the perfect send-off and way to celebrate his name and honour.

Back home in Argentina – Saving the best for last

In his home country, it has been nothing but sad scenes all over as they mourn him. People have gathered to catch their last glimpse of him in his coffin before he is laid to rest in his final resting place.

Another view for us to witness the love the people have for him, what he meant to all, and what he did with his time on earth. That is touch peoples’ hearts in whatever way he could.

He will truly be missed and he will truly be remembered as one of the GREATEST footballers to ever grace God’s green earth and football pitches!
