Since his departure from Old Trafford in 2009, Cristiano Ronaldo is rumored to return to Manchester United every summer. Will it happen this time though?

Every summer, there is one rumor that bemuses Manchester United fans. The return of their lost son, Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese made his way to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009 for a record fee of £80 million.

Since then, the fans have been hopeful of the player’s return to Old Trafford as a Red Devil. During his 11 seasons away from England, the player has returned to the Theatre of Dreams twice to play against his old team. Once as a Galactico and once as a Juventus player.

The Portuguese came very near to a return to Old Trafford when Sir Alex Ferguson led Manchester United to the title in 2012/13. Talking about Ronaldo’s return, Patrice Evra told his encounter with Sir Alex Ferguson before the gaffer’s retirement.

Evra told the media that Ronaldo was all set to come back to Manchester United along with Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur. He said:

"I remember we talked maybe two weeks before and he said ‘Patrice, I will be here another five years’He even told me ‘99% Cristiano Ronaldo will come’ I was like ‘Wow’, we are ready to bounce back and to even win the Champions League again. After that everybody knows what happened.(Via: The Times)"

When Madrid were interested in getting David de Gea, before the fax machine fiasco, Cristiano Ronaldo was once again rumored to be part of the deal. However, none of the rumors were true and the fans were left bereft of the forward. With Jose Mourinho taking the reigns after Louis van Gaal as the manager, things started cooling down.

After a horrendous World Cup in 2018, Jose Mourinho was interested in getting the attacker to Manchester United, according to reports. However, Ronaldo chose Juventus over Old Trafford during that summer transfer window, sending shockwaves across the globe.

With Paul Pogba’s form continuously declining and the reinforcement in the form of Donny van de Beek has made the club reassess their strategy. According to a few reports, the Old Trafford outfit is set to sell the player for a fee of around £53 million.

With Juventus looking to bring back Pogba to Allianz Arena and balance their wage books, a swap deal can still be an option for both parties. It is also reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is excited to reunite with his former teammate and has submitted a formal offer to the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes.

"Manchester United have reportedly submitted a “formal offer” to the agent of Cristiano Ronaldoin an attempt to bring the Portuguese superstar back to Old Trafford. Reports in recent days have linked Juventus star Ronaldo with a return to United and a move to Paris Saint-Germain. (Via: express.co.uk)"
