Manchester United: Dean Henderson rightfully seeks first-team football

Dean Henderson’s choice to stay at Manchester United came at a price. Due to his lack of game time the stopper is considering his options.

During the summer transfer window, it came as a bit of surprise that Dean Henderson was requested to stay at Old Trafford and work as competition rather than back up to the then out of form, David de Gea.

Since the decision de Gea has been a better version of his 2019/2020 self and slowly working towards his best. For those on the short end of the deal, it hasn’t exactly worked out for Henderson nor his beloved Sheffield United, where he spent two outstanding seasons prior to his Old Trafford stay.

"After returning from a successful loan spell at Sheffield United in the summer, Henderson is content with his role at the club for now but has been told by England manager Gareth Southgate he will need to play more regularly if he hopes to challenge Everton’s Jordan Pickford for the No.1 spot at the European Championships."

More from Manchester United

This is not to say Aaron Ramsdale has been poor. On the contrary, on several occasions, Ramsdale has saved the Blades from being the worst conceding team in the Premier League.

They sit at the very bottom and are finding it hard to pull off those 1-0 surprise wins at home. With the young Englishman in between the sticks for Chris Wilder, they operate with a more assured performance from front to back.

They are in need of each other with Sheffield unable to get out of the drop zone thanks to having no wins and only one point after eight matchdays played. A switch is needed for both Sheffield and Dean, so why not help each other out come January.

Manchester United spoilt

With Dean in behind de Gea, the club is spoilt with two first-team goalkeepers and a world-class second choice in Sergio Romero. Henderson’s ambition to want to play regular football after his stellar introduction to top-flight football in England is the right one.

His celestial Premier League debut put him at the table with the best and in the conversation of a possible starter for the Three Lions. He along with Nick Pope established themselves as options ahead of the struggling Jordan Pickford.

Him pulling splinters out of his backside, waiting for a shot in a cup match, European or domestic, is a waste of England’s gifts. Pickford remains suspect, to say the least. Gareth Southgate needs his top talent to stay match fit and playing at the highest level consistently.

There is no better time than now for both Pope and Henderson to push to being named England’s number 1 stopper.

What’s there to consider for Untied?

A day ago the 23-year-old made his feelings known about seeking regular minutes on the pitch and wants a loan move if possible. Following this, the club responded by stating they are considering the option of loaning him out.

The Manchester outfit, therefore, put the brakes on a Romero exit. Even though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be keen on a Sergio stay, he needs to put more trust in the Argentine. He has proven on more than one occasion he can do what is asked of him.

"Manchester United are delaying a decision on Sergio Romero’s future until a plan for Dean Henderson’s development is finalised, sources have told ESPN.The 33-year-old, valued at between £8 million and £10m by United, is under contract until the end of the season while the club also hold an option to extend his deal for another 12 months. As per reports, there are clubs in England and abroad who are waiting in the background for Romero, and the same goes for Henderson. There have also been no reports that the Blades have approached United.

Although, a move in January for the Englishman who is seeking a shot at the EURO 2021 tournament is definitely on. Man United would be silly not to go through with it.

Do you want to see Dean Henderson go out on loan rather than waste away on the bench at Old Trafford?
