Very much middle of the road for Wolves in their opening matches. Although I do have other reasons to be concerned about Nuno’s men. They had one of the smallest squads in the league last term, and one of the longest seasons!

They started early July in the Europe League qualifying, then continued in that competition until August, but just got knocked out before the point at which they would have a BGW1. I think there’s every possibility of a hangover from a long season impacting their early games, so I will be avoiding them for now.

Main Pick

Raul Jimenez (FWD, 8.5m)

Even more so than Leicester and Spurs, the FPL options at Wolves are limited, and the very best one is someone who demands your attention.

Jimenez is incredibly consistent, improving his 13 goal tally in his first year to 17 last season. He’s also top among forwards for chances created and big chances created, showing his selflessness and hence his dual-threat for both goals and assists. I owned him for stretches of last season and certainly will again this year!

Differential Pick

Diogo Jota (MID, 6.5m)

He was reclassified as a forward last year, then pushed back into midfield this year, which does make him a little more appealing for FPL managers. He is also consistent, just with much lower returns due to his tendency to be rotated depending on Nuno’s chosen formation. However, when he does play, there is as much chance of him playing up front with Jimenez as well as him playing on the wing, which makes him an OOP prospect!

Defensive Pick

Willy Boly (DEF, 5.5m)

Coady may be in the headlines currently but it was the return of this man from injury that turned Wolves’ defence into an impenetrable wall. Only Laporte also played over 1000 minutes and conceded fewer goals per 90 (that sounds convoluted but it gets rid of all the players who had a few cameos and conceded none). This also makes him more likely to pick up bonus points when they keep a clean sheet.

Steer Clear

Leander Dendoncker (MID, 5.0m)

He may be tempting due to that low price, but Dendoncker spent much of last year playing as a CB in Boly’s absence. When the club captain returned, Dendoncker was restored to his spot on the bench! If he does start as a midfielder again then he could be a decent cheap option, but right now I would wait to be sure he won’t be on Wolves’ bench, as well as yours!
