Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Manchester United struggle to sign players this summer continues.

Manchester United are keeping constant tabs on Valencia striker Maxi Gomez, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer eyes quality in depth before his squad starts to compete on all fronts. It is understood that the Red Devils have maintained their interest in the forward since January when Marcus Rashford suffered an injury.

Anthony Martial, who has repaid Solskjaer’s faith by scoring 23 goals as a central striker last season, is yet to become a world-class forward who could be relied upon on a consistent basis. To increase his output further, United are planning to add another flourishing striker into the squad.

Maxi Gomez has made steady progress at Valencia since his move from Celta Vigo last summer. The Uruguay international managed 14 goal contributions for Los Che during the 2019/20 campaign. United’s scouting team has recommended the striker to Solskjaer on multiple occasions.

Valencia are forced to sell majority of their first-team players as owner Peter Lim suffers unprecedented financial losses. Thus far, Los Murcelagos have managed to cull Dani Parejo, Ferran Torres, Francis Coquelin, and Rodrigo off their record books. Only skipper Jose Gaya is understood to be immune to the selling spree.

"The La Liga club are currently in something of a desperate financial situation, which has led to them selling Rodrigo to Leeds United, and their plan is to get some more in the bank too.Maxi Gomez has a contract at Mestalla until 2023 with a release clause of €140m. That being said, Valencia wouldn’t expect teams to match that, but would want to get a minimum of €60m for the striker.Barcelona, and various Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, are circling around for the services of Gomez. Should Manchester United play it smart, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could attain a striker who still has room for improvement. It seems most of the Red Devils’ striker targets would coincide with Barcelona’s, who are looking to replace veteran forward Luis Suarez.

The Blaugrana bosses are expected to make a move for Moussa Dembele, who has been on Manchester United’s list of targets and is open to a new challenge this summer.

Despite several rumours, Jadon Sancho still remains Manchester United’s transfer priority this summer. Additionally, there are several other deals which are being worked on by the Old Trafford chiefs in confidence.

On a selling front, Chris Smalling is expected to start the exit spree at Old Trafford as the English defender closes in on a permanent move to AS Roma.
